The Fall Semester 09/20/17
The STEAM team is getting ready for our next cruise day out in the field. We are very excited for our next run from Escambia River to the Gulf of Mexico and as we are getting ready, we wanted to show a little recap of our last cruise day. STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) is a project designed to integrate these diverse disciplines together. STEAMing the River to the Gulf is a project that utilizes digital imaging, molecular biology and other techniques to assess local water quality and turbidity, as well as nutrient loads and potential impacts of invasive species. We are all enthusiastic to integrate artistic expression alongside scientific research and data analysis. We are also using this project as a means of public outreach and education. This month we are teaming up with students from Brown Barge Middle school for an exciting fieldtrip to Big Lagoon. Students will have an opportunity for hands-on experience and lessons on water quality, turbidity and the variety of ecological roles of vegetation and wildlife. Please stay tuned for the upcoming October cruise, new research activities in our fall season, and new accomplishments for the STEAM team.
