Brown barge middle, escambia county school district
oceans class - 7th & 8th Graders

Blog post by Carrie Daniel
The STEAM Team was honored to be part of the Oceans Class, headed up by Ms. Sara Barcellona and also taught by Mr. James Westmark, Mr. Richard Hunter, and Mrs. Susan Hunter, in Sept & Oct 2017. Waidner and Albrecht visited the school in late September to talk with 92 middle school students about the local ecosystems, focusing on the role of turbidity and water quality on the health of keystone species seagrasses, including Ruppia, Thalassia, and Halodule. On October 5, we were joined by Seashore park ranger Mike Aymond and Carrie Stevenson, UF/IFAS Extension Coastal Sustainability Agent, to demonstrate the ecosystem components at Big Lagoon State Park.

What To Expect in STEAM2018

Carrie analyzed the distribution and abundance of photoheterotrophic microbes in three transects of the Escambia River-Pensacola Bay estuary-Gulf of Mexico. We are now writing up results for publication.
